Winslow Homer dominates in Curlin Stakes

Winslow Homer was a convincing  nine-length winner in the Curlin S. at Saratoga on Aug. 1. The 3-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song left little doubt as who the best horse was as he established control right from the start of the 1 1/8 mile race.

Unbridled’s Song has enjoyed another stellar year in 2010. His runners have earned in excess of $4.1 million, good for seventh among North American stallions.

Though he didn’t have more than a length lead at any time through the first six furlongs, Robbie Albarado had Winslow Homer under a snug hold, and once he turned him loose at the top of the stretch, he bounded away from the field to win under a hand ride. The final time was 1:49.69 and the winner’s share of the purse was $45,000.

The Anthony Dutrow trainee was coming off a third place finish in the Iowa Derby on June 26, which was his first start since winning the Holy Bull S. (G3) last January.  The Curlin was his second win at Saratoga; he broke his maiden at the upstate New York oval going seven furlongs last August.

Winslow Homer is now 4-0-2 in six starts, earning $222,825 for Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm. Porter bought Winslow Homer at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale for $310,000. The gray colt is out of the mare Summer Raven, winner of the Grade 3 Tempted S. and is out of Rahy Rose, a half-sister to millionaire and multiple Grade 1 winner Wild Rush.
