Where’s Sterling shines in Memorial Day Handicap

Where’s Sterling outclassed the field with a 7 1/2-length romp in the $75,000 Memorial Day H. at Calder Race Course. The 5-year-old by Northern Afleet was coming off fourth-place finishes in the Grade 1 Donn H. and Grade 3 Skip Away, both at Gulfstream Park.

Where’s Sterling, the 8-5 favorite, didn’t get the cleanest of trips in the 1-1/16 mile main track contest. Bottled up in third behind horses for six furlongs, the bay Kentucky-bred went three wide under John Delgado into the stretch to assume command. He drew off from there, leaving the field in his wake to get the distance in 1:44.59.

Owned by Frank Calabrese and trained by Luis Ramirez, got his second stakes win of his career, with the first coming in the $250,000 Philip Iselin H. (G3) last August. His overall record stands at 4-5-0 in 13 starts, earning $409,665.

Where’s Sterling is out of Twinkler, who is a half-sister to Flat Top, the two-time Eclipse Award champion steeplechaser.
