Unrivaled Belle made short work of the field in the $150,000 Rampart S. on Mar. 20 at Gulfstream Park, giving her sire Unbridled’s Song his third graded stakes winner of 2010.
The Rampart, contested at 1 1/8-miles on the main track, went to post with a field of eight, with Unrivaled Belle on the far outside. Despite the unlucky draw, she shot right to the lead under the guidance of jockey Kent Desormeaux, outrunning longshot Champagne Eyes going into the first turn. After a quarter mile, Unrivaled Belle was up a length and a half, a lead she would never relinquish at any point. The final margin was 1 ¾-lengths over Champagne Eyes. The Beyer Speed Figure of 97 is a careeer-best for Unrivaled Belle.
This was the first graded win for Unrivaled Belle, who was most recently a solid fourth in the La Canada (G2) at Santa Anita on Valentine’s Day, her first start of 2010. She had a great 2009, never worse than second in five starts, with a win in the listed Real Prize S. at Belmont. She was also second in the Gazelle S. (G1) last November.
Trained by Bill Mott, the gray or roan 4-year-old filly improved her overall record to 4-2-0 from seven lifetime starts. The $90,000 payday raised her earnings to $259, 270 for owners Peter Vegso and Gary Seidler. The owners purchased Unrivaled Belle at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale for $260,000.
After the race, Mott was looking to more big races. “She ran well in the Gazelle and we were looking forward to this year. She’s been invited to the (grade 1) Apple Blossom (Oaklawn Park on Apr. 9, a race expected to inlcude Zenyatta) and then there is a race Derby weekend at Churchill; we’ll look at the options.”
