Unbridled’s Song’s multiple Grade One winner Will Take Charge was named Champion 3-year-old Male during Saturday evening’s Eclipse Awards in Hallandale, Fla.
He is the third champion sired by Unbridled’s Song, along with Midshipman, 2008 champion 2-year-old colt, and Embur’s Song, Canada’s 2011 champion older mare.
Will Take Charge, trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas and owned by Willis Horton, was purchased by Horton for $425,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
Making 11 starts in 2013, Will Take Charge was a model of consistency, winning four graded stakes: Travers (G1), Clark H. (G1, against older horses), Pennsylvania Derby (G2), and Rebel S. (G2). He was also second by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), ultimately earning $2,960,977 for the year.
Will Take Charge is currently with Lukas’ stable at Oaklawn Park, where he has posted four works since his victory in the Nov. 29 Clark.
Unbridled Forever takes Silverbulletday S.
On the same day Will Take Charge earned championship honors, Unbridled’s Song got his 106th stakes winner when Unbridled Forever, a daughter of 2006 Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Lemons Forever, captured the $120,000 Silverbulletday S. at Fair Grounds. Unbridled Forever, a Charles Fipke homebred, has won 2 of 3 starts and earned $100,830.
