Sombree’s 2 ½-length score in the $100,000 Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies S. continued the hot streak for her sire Eskendereya, who has had three stakes winners in the past five days.
Sombree, making her first stakes start since a nice maiden special weight score on June 23, made her winning move in the Juvenile with about three furlongs to run, going from third to first and then pulling clear late to win comfortably under Edgar Prado (VIDEO).
Sombree is owned by Jerry Brumley and Kay Reed and trained by Eric Reed. The 2-year-old filly ran her record to 2-1-0 in four starts and has now earned $89,550. She is the first foal out of La Sombre, who is a half-sister to Sunshine Millions Oaks winner Beltene.
Eskendereya’s other recent stakes winners are the 3-year-olds Conquest Pacemaker ($125,000 Toronto Cup) and Isabella Sings ($60,000 Little Silver S.). Eskendereya is a top-five Second-Crop sire and is also ranked eighth on the Leading 2-year-old Sires list.
