Sweet Whiskey a “Star” is in debut

Old Fashioned became the first U.S. Freshman stallion to sire a “TDN Rising Star” this season, when his daughter Sweet Whiskey zipped 5 1/2-furlongs at Saratoga in 1:02.81 on Sunday, missing the track record by less than a half-second.

Sweet Whiskey was in control the entire trip of the $80,000 maiden special event on the main track. She opened up two lengths over foes after a very fast quarter mile :22.15 seconds, relaxed on her own around the turn, then drew off with authority in the lane to secure the win.

“We felt she had been training very well; there were a couple of other fillies she’d been training with who had already started at the meet and ran well,” said trainer Todd Pletcher. “We had a good line on her and she lived up to our expectations. I was impressed by the time; it was very fast. She seemed like every time they got to her a little bit she had a little response, and I was particularly pleased with the way she galloped out. I don’t know what else she could have done in her debut to be more impressive than that. She’s a very talented filly, and we were just happy she ran as well as she trained. Obviously, (we’ll) go to a stakes, it just depends on which one.”

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, the bay filly also was a hit in the sales ring earlier this year. Consigned by Eddie Woods at the OBS March 2-year-old sale, she sold for $300,000 to agent Steve Young after breezing in :10.1 at the under tack show in Ocala. She is one of three foals out of Baby Betty, all winners, including the listed winner El Gaucho.

With two maiden special winners and nearly $100,000 in progeny earnings from his first crop to date, Old Fashioned ranks among the top six Kentucky stallions on the Freshman Sires list. By Unbridled’s Song, Old Fashioned’s 2013 stud fee at Taylor Made was $8,000 stands and nurses.
