Veteran campaigner Southern Style flew home late to garner the $50,000 Need for Speed S. on May 18, giving the 7-year-old by Forestry his fourth stakes win, and second in this race, in his illustrious career.
Last of seven after three furlongs, Southern Style made up nine lengths in the final quarter mile to win the five furlong turf sprint by a half length under Ramsey Zimmerman. The final time of :55.75 was less than a second from the track record of 55 seconds flat.
Southern Style has been campaigned for most of his career in Louisiana by owner/trainer Maynard Chatters. The dark bay Kentucky-bred as hit the board in 23 of 38 lifetime starts, earning $324,172.
Bred by Twin Creeks Farm, Southern Style is out of the stakes-winning mare Lady Dixie, who is a full sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Chimes Band.
