Forestry’s Southern Style willed his way to victory in the $50,000 Need For Speed April 29 at Evangeline Downs, giving the 6-year-old son of Forestry his second career stakes victory.
In fourth for the first quarter mile, Southern Style went up to challenge for the lead in around the turn. With three horses across the track just an eighth mile from the finish, Southern Style outdueled his competitors to win by a head and complete the five furlongs in 57.26 seconds.
Southern Style has made all of his starts on the Louisiana circuit. This was his second career stakes win, the first coming in the $50,000 Temperence Hill S. at Louisiana Downs. He is now 11-1-7 in 28 starts, earning $242,520.
Southern Style was bred in Kentucky by Twin Creeks Farm and is owned and trained by Maynard Chatters. He is out of the stakes winning mare Lady Dixie, full brother to multiple Grade 2 winner Chimes Band.
Forestry now has five stakes horses in 2011, including Separate Forest, winner of the Grade 3 Las Cienegas at Santa Anita in early April. He also will be represented in the May 7 Kentucky Derby (G1) by Shackleford, runner-up in the Florida Derby (G1).
