Taylor Made stallion Forestry had a pair of 3-year-olds capture maiden special weight races on May 29, one at Arlington Park and the second at Hollywood Park. Both races were on the grass.
At Arlington, Kenny Lane won a 5 1/2-furlong sprint by a hard-fought neck. The dark bay or brown filly chased a loose-on-the-lead pacesetter, taking over at the top of the stretch. She was challenged inside the final sixteenth mile, but prevailed in a stiff drive.
Kenny Lane has three siblings, all winners, including her half-sister Pitamakan, winner of the Hatoof S.
Further west at Hollywood, the flashy-looking colt Travel Squad made his second lifetime start a winning one going a mile on the green. Like Kenny Lane, Travel Squad won by a neck after stalking a free-running leader. In a race where the top four were separated by little more than a length, Travel Squad would prevail at a generous 18-1. The win was worth $25,200 for Spendthrift Farm LLC.
Travel Squad is out of Youbetshecan, who was winless in five starts but is a half-sister to the incomparable Best Pal. Travel Squad was offered at auction at the 2009 Ocala Breeders’ Sales March 2-year-old sale, where he went for $125,000 to B. Wayne Hughes.
