Old Fashioned to stand at Taylor Made

Multiple graded stakes winner Old Fashioned, who was unbeaten at 2 and won four of six starts, will stand in 2010 at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky.  The 3-year-old colt will stand at the same farm as his sire, Unbridled’s Song, whose fee this year was $125,000.

Bred in Kentucky by Rod and Lorraine Roriguez from the Meadowlake mare Collect Call, Old Fashioned was picked out of the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale by Tom McGreevy, who purchased him for $800,000 for owner Rick Porter. He raced in the colors of Porter’s Fox Hill Farms and was trained by Larry Jones.

Porter said he has retained an interest in Old Fashioned. “I’m very happy I was able to work it out to stand Old Fashioned at Taylor Made,” Porter said. “I just hope he is a good a producer of talented offspring as he was a runner.”

Old Fashioned won all three of his races at 2 and his first start as a 3-year-old before finishing his career with a pair of second-place finishes. He earned $583,280.

He showed how game he was in his first starts, coming from off the pace going six furlongs to just get up and win by a nose. Then he displayed his brilliance in his second race, winning an allowance event by 15 1/2 lengths. He became a graded stakes winner in his third outing, taking the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct by 7 1/4 lengths.

Old Fashioned was put on the Triple Crown trail at Oaklawn Park, where he made his last three starts. He won the track’s Southwest Stakes (gr. III) by 3 1/4 lengths before finishing behind Win Willy in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) and dropping a half-length decision to Papa Clem in the Arkansas Derby (gr. II).

“He was the total package,” Jones said. “He had both speed and stamina. He won the first time out going short from off the pace and then led all the way going a mile and an eighth in his third start.

“He was a high-priced yearling, and he was the real deal,” the trainer added. “He was very precocious but you knew he could go long. I just wished we were able to have had him longer.”

“Old Fashioned has the traits we look for,” Ben Taylor of Taylor Made said in a release. “He had the ability to go two turns and is a brilliant stallion prospect. We raised Old Fashioned, his sire, and all his dam’s foals so we know first-hand how exceptional looking the whole family is.

“His sire, Unbridled’s Song, was a 2-year-old sales topper at $1.4 million. His graded stakes-winning, Kentucky Oaks (gr. I)-placed dam, Collect Call, was a 2-year-old sales topper and his half-sister by Fusaichi Pegasus was a Saratoga filly sales topper at $2 million. The repeatability of brilliance in his pedigree, combined with his good looks, increases the probability of his offspring being successful in the sale ring and on the racetrack just like his sire’s offspring. We are very excited about his future as a sire.”
