Boys at Tosconova, a 2-year-old colt by Officer, gave the Taylor Made stallion his sixth stakes horse of 2010 with a second-place finish in the $110,300 Kentucky Juvenile (G3) on Apr. 30 at Churchill Downs.
The dark bay or brown colt was making his racing debut against four winners in the five furlong dash. Trainer Bob Hess, Jr. had brought his charge to Keeneland at the beginning of April, where he had put in several strong workouts. With Kent Desormeaux aboard in the Juvenile, Boys at Tosconova settled behind his foes for the first three furlongs. He was five wide around the turn and into the stretch, but still finished with plenty of gusto to be second, a length and a half behind Lou Brissie.
Afterwards, Hess reflected on his colt as one who will appreciate the longer races later in the year, “Kent (Desormeaux) really helped us with the preparation up at Keeneland. We knew that he’s not really a five-furlong horse, but we thought he had enough class to be competitive. I think he proved himself to be a nice horse,” Hess said.
Taylor Made consigned and sold Boys at Tosconova at the 2008 Keeneland breeding stock sale. Hess subsequently purchased him when he was offered at the 2009 Keeneland yearling sale. He is out of Little Bonnet, who earned $143,716.
Owned by Todd Cady, Denny Kanakaris, and Richard Hale, Boys at Tosconova earned $22,060.
