Shareholder, a 2-year-old colt by Not This Time, remained undefeated with an impressive victory in the
Norfolk S. (G2) at Royal Ascot on Thursday, June 20. The game score earned Shareholder a berth in the
$1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1).
Ridden by James Doyle for trainer Karl Burke, Shareholder settled into stride on the far side of the
course. He charged into contention approaching the final furlong and powered away from 12 rivals to
win by one length in the end. He covered the five furlongs in a fast :59.77 over the course rated good to
firm.
Bred in Kentucky by Skyfall Thoroughbreds, Shareholder was a $62,000 Keeneland September Yearling
Sale graduate. He sold next to his owner Wathnan Racing for $495,481 at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale
prior to making his debut. He won his career bow at Beverley just 12 days before his start at Royal Ascot
and is has yet to be defeated in his two outings.
Following the win, Burke said, “I’m delighted. We haven’t had him very long, but he’s done nothing but
please us at home. I wouldn’t see any problem stepping back up to six furlongs if we want to. Races like
the Prix Morny (G1) come into the equation. I don’t see why we wouldn’t go straight to a Group 1 now.”
By Not This Time, Shareholder is out of the Invincible Spirit (IRE) mare Cloudy Dancer (GB).
Of the victory, winning rider James Doyle said on RacingTV.com, “He’s still learning. I tried to keep a lid
on him for as long as possible, until we got down to the inside pole. I just wanted to give him time to get
organized. He’s got a big engine.”
