Evening Jewel was one of a trio of 3-year-old fillies named a finalist for divisional championship honors on Jan. 6, when the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters announced the nominees for 2010 Eclipse Awards.
The daughter of Northern Afleet put together an excellent sophomore season in 2010, compiling a record of 4-3-2 in nine starts and earning $915,343 for owners Tom and Marilyn Braly. The bay filly was one of the most versatile performers in her division. She won the Honeymoon H. (G2), San Clemente (G2), and Del Mar Oaks (G1), all on the grass on the southern California circuit; the Ashland (G1) at Keeneland on the Polytrack, was second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1), also at Churchill Downs, on conventional dirt.
Evening Jewel is the first foal out of Jewel of the Night, who is a half-sister to the multiple stakes winners Saucey Evening and Petition the Lady. She also comes from the same family that includes multiple Grade 1 winner General Challenge.
Eclipse Award winners will be announced at the 40th annual Eclipse Awards dinner ceremony on Monday, Jan. 17, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in Miami Beach, Fla.
