Sovereign Default, a good-looking 2-year-old bay colt by Northern Afleet, made his debut in fine style with a two-length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race at Belmont Park on July 15.
Taylor Made’s Northern Afleet currently ranks fifteenth on the 2010 North American General sire list. His five graded stakes winners on the year are topped by the 3-year-old filly Evening Jewel, winner of the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland S. and the Grade 2 Honeymoon H. at Hollywood Park.
Sovereign Default looked like a horse with far more experience, as he sat patiently in second, waiting for the cue to go from jockey Alan Garcia. When Garcia did ask around the quarter-mile mark, he opened up a couple of lengths on the field in short order, cruising home to stop the clock in 1:03.79. He earned a stellar 95 Beyer Speed Figure, a number seldom registered by a 2-year-old.
Trained by Richard Violette, Jr. for Klaravich Stables Inc. and W. H. Lawrence, Sovereign Default netted $30,000 for the victory.
