Denman’s Call, a Northern Afleet 3-year-old, turned in one of the most impressive starts for a 2016 Triple Crown trail hopeful Saturday at Santa Anita, rolling to a 3 ¾-length maiden special weight win.
Making his debut for trainer Doug O’Neill, Denman’s Call came rolling from fifth with a four-wide move on the turn, blowing past the leaders to get the 5 ½-furlongs in 1:03.97 and earn a very solid 81 Beyer Speed Figure (WATCH RACE).
“Denman’s Call had been working very well, so we were hopeful he’d run like that. I believe he’s one of our best 3-year-olds and definitely has a graded stakes in his future,” said O’Neill after the stellar performance.
The winner, W C Racing, Milt Gilman and Mark Verge homebred, is the first foal out of Maggie McGowan, who is a half-sister to Northern’ Afleet’s multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Evening Jewel.
