Next extends stakes winning streak to seven with Greenwood Cup (G3) repeat

Next made yet another victory look easy Saturday at Parx when the son of Not This Time rolled home a 10-length winner in the $200,000 Greenwood Cup (G3), a race he also won in 2023.

Next has now won seven straight stakes races, four of them graded, by an average of more than 13 lengths, a remarkable accomplishment at any level of competition. The 6-year-old is one of Not This Time’s six graded stakes winners in 2024.

In what has become a routine performance, Next patiently stalked the pace, this time set by Ridin With Biden, for the first mile. Next easily went by the pacesetter with about three furlongs to go and coasted home without urging.

“For me, my gut tells me to stay with the distance and give up the surface,” trainer Billy Cowans said when asked about Next’s possible start in either the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) or Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). “I know you have to face the Europeans who have a good turn of foot. But going the mile and a quarter on dirt, I worry about the pace scenario the horse might get into. He was kind of tugging today a little bit at the bridle and if you put a :23 and :46 up there, he’ll get to tugging pretty good.

“The thing for us is to have fun with him, the money doesn’t matter,” Cowans continued. “We found something the horse likes to do and we’d like to keep doing it with him.”

Next is now 13-0-1 in 23 starts and has earned $1,336,361, the bulk of that coming after his owner Michael Foster claimed him in April of 2022. Next was bred in Kentucky by Silverton Hill, LLC.
