Taylor Made Stallions Daddy Long Legs was represented by his first North American winner on Saturday when Montauk Daddy won a maiden special weight at Belmont Park.
Ridden by Jose Lezcano for trainer Linda Rice, Montauk Daddy shot to the front shortly after the start of the six-furlong turf test. He shrugged off early pace pressure, opened a clear 2 ½-length lead in the stretch and prevailed comfortably by 1 ¾ lengths, stopping the clock in a lively 1:08.87 while racing Lasix-free.
The $160,000 OBS April sale graduate breezed a bullet quarter-mile of :20 3/5 at that sale’s under tack preview and he races for Chris Fountoukis and McCourt Racing. The 2-year-old colt is produced from the Old Fashioned mare Snow Fashion and was bred in Florida by Jennifer A. Johnson and Gillian K. Johnson.
Daddy Longs Legs, a son of Scat Daddy, was a multiple Graded stakes-winning millionaire on the racetrack for Michael Tabor, Derek Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. John Magnier and was originally trained by Aiden O’Brien. He won his debut at two before capturing the prestigious Royal Lodge Stakes (G2) by 3 ¼ lengths at Newmarket. As a 3-year-old, he scored his biggest victory in the $2,000,000 UAE Derby (G2) over the main track at Meydan, earning a berth into the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Produced from the multiple stakes-winning Meadowlake mare Dreamy Maiden, Daddy Long Legs was bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds and he retired with career earnings of $1,348,231. As a sire, Daddy Long Legs topped all first-crop sires in Chile with five stakes winners and 10 stakes horses from his initial crop of Chilean runners, which included Grade 1-winning 2-Year-Old Champion Colt Fallen From Heaven, a Grade 1 winner on dirt and a Grade 2 winner on turf, and Grade 3-winning 2-year-old filly Atomicka.
