Led by a $550,000 colt purchased late in the session, Midnight Storm’s 2-year-olds were among the most coveted first-crop offspring Tuesday at the OBS Spring 2-year-old sale.

Three out of the four lots by Midnight Storm offered on Tuesday brought at least $150,000, while his average sale price was $258,250, more than 21 times his bred-on stud fee.

One of the last lots offered Tuesday was Midnight Storm’s hip No. 297, consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds. The dark bay colt went to Maverick Racing/Commonwealth. The latter is a new microshare ownership venture recently launched by WinStar Farm.

“We just loved him,” WinStar’s Elliott Walden said of the $550,000 colt. “He was a really nice colt who breezed great (:20 4/5). We felt like he looked a lot like his daddy. We have a few shares in his daddy and bought one at the yearling sale as well. We’ve been very impressed with the Midnight Storms. I think everybody is. He has had a good sales season.”

Bred in Kentucky by Siena Farms, the colt is out of Tasunke and his third dam is Grade I winner Tap to Music. This is also the family of Northern Afleet.

A bit earlier in the session hip No. 264, consigned by Parrish Farms, agent, went to John Fort for $310,000. The dark bay caught the eye during the Under Tack show when he breezed a furlong in a bullet :09 4/5.

The colt’s dam Summer of Joy is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Spectacular Sky.

“It’s hard to check every box at these sales because it’s not just looks. They have to come out and work good and vet after,” said Taylor Made’s Liam Benson on the great start at the 2-year-old sales for Midnight Storm. “The general feel is things look pretty good for the horse so far. They still have to get to the races, but at least it’s a good start.”
