Last Leaf rallies for second career stakes win

Not This Time got his first of two stakes winners on Saturday when Last Leaf made a daring move along the fence to win the $75,000 Melody of Colors S. on the grass at Gulfstream Park.

Later in the day, Epicenter stamped himself a leading Kentucky Derby (G1) contender with his victory in the Louisiana Derby (G2).

Last Leaf, owned by Monarch Stables, was near the back of the field of nine early in the “about” five-furlong race, then began to make up ground as they sped around the turn. She had three lengths to make up at the top of the stretch, which she did when she squeezed past Creative Girl on the rail and then outran American Starlet to win by a half-length in :57.40 on the firm turf.

Last Leaf won the 2021 Hollywood Beach S. in September over this same surface and placed in this year’s Forward Gal S. on the main track. The 3-year-old filly has now earned $180,675.

Last Leaf was bred by Khalid Mishref Alkahtani and is the first foal to race out of the stakes-placed My Miss Kallie.
