Forestry 2YO graduates on Churchill’s Fall Stars day

Forestry’s 2-year-old colt Shackleford prevailed in a race-long duel to break his maiden at second asking Nov. 27 at Churchill Downs. The “Stars of Tomorrow” card, devoted exclusively to the juveniles, annually brings out some of the best young horses of the meet.

Shackleford proved he may be one of those future stars with his very game performance. Breaking from post 11 in tandem with Ballyclough just to his outside, he battled head to head with his foe the entire race. Ballyclough actually pulled a neck in front in midstretch, but Shackleford fought back and made the lead late to win by a half-length in a time of 1:23.65 for the seven furlongs.

Shackleford is definitely bred to be a star as well. He is out of Oatsee, making him a half-brother to very classy fillies: Lady Joanne and Baghdaria. Lady Joanne earned just shy of $1 million and won the Alabama S. (G1), Golden Rod S. (G2), and the Dogwood S. (G3). Baghdaria bankrolled $725K and won three Grade 3 events: the Indiana Oaks, the Iowa Oaks, and the Silverbulletday S.

Michael Lauffer and W.B. Cubbedge bred and own Shackleford in Kentucky. He has earned $35,366 in his two starts.
