Fashion Plate struts her stuff in Grade 1 Las Virgenes S.

Old Fashioned’s latest 3-year-old star Fashion Plate showed her heels to her foes in Saturday’s $300,000 Las Virgenes S. (G1) at Santa Anita Park, setting all the pace and holding off a pair of challenges to emerge a half-length winner (VIDEO).

With a pair of graded stakes-winning fillies already this year, Old Fashioned is second on the 2014 Second Crop Sire list, and is the only sophomore sire with a Grade 1 winner this year.

Fashion Plate, owned by Arnold Zetcher and Michael Tabor, had to turn back both Taste Like Candy in the early stages and even-money favorite Streaming in the final furlong to secure the top spot.

“When they came to her, she really dug in and tried real hard. She’s a special filly,” said winning trainer Simon Callaghan. “It means a lot to win this race. Gary (Stevens) put up a great ride. She went nice fractions, she went pretty quick and I think that was a testament to her courage and ability that she was able to do that and sustain the run.

“We’ll look at the Santa Anita Oaks (G1, April 5) and if she does well there, maybe we’ll take her to Kentucky (Oaks, G1).”

Fashion Plate earned 50 points towards the Kentucky Oaks, along with a $180,000 payday. She is 2-0-1 in four lifetime starts. Callaghan purchased Fashion Plate out of last year’s OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training for $340,000, the second-highest price paid for a filly at the sale.
