A colt from the first crop of Eskendereya topped the Equine Sales Company of Louisiana’s 2013 Select Yearling Sale with a winning bid of $140,000 for hip No. 91 during the one-day sale on Sept. 4.
The dark bay colt, named Tortuga Sound, was consigned by Red River Farm, agent. Brian House was the winning bidder for the Louisiana-bred who is out of Tortuga Flats, the champion 2-year-old Louisiana filly, a five-time stakes winner of $594,064. Tortuga Flats’ half-brother Tortuga Straits was also a Louisiana champion 2-year-old.
Eskendereya, who stood the 2013 season at Taylor Made for $17,500, LFS&N, was unbeaten on dirt in a brilliant career that included wins in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth.
With eight yearlings offered to date at auction, Eskendereya’s foals have brought an average nearly $75,000. In the upcoming Sept. 9-21 Keeneland September Yearling sale, Eskendereya has a total of 16 yearlings in Book 1 of the catalog.
