Eskendereya colt gets first stakes win in $125,000 Toronto Cup

Conquest Pacemaker sprung out of the gate on top and never looked back en route to a 1 ½-length score in the $125,000 Toronto Cup Sunday afternoon at Woodbine.

The 3-year-old chestnut Eskendereya colt was the first of two stakes winners, along with Isabella Sings in the $60,000 Little Silver S., on the day for the Taylor Made stallion. Eskendereya moved into the top five on the Second-Crop Sire list with over $1.5 million in progeny earnings. His 32 winners to date are also second-most for any sophomore sire.

Conquest Pacemaker got Sunday’s win, his first in a stakes, after setting a solid, but sensible pace early, leaving his foes too much to do in the stretch. The final time was 1:46.08 for the nine furlongs on the firm turf.

A $150,000 purchase at the 2014 March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training, Conquest Pacemaker banked $75,000 in victory while improving his record to 2-0-1 from three starts.

“(Trainer) Mark Casse’s team does a great job and this horse was ready to run,” said winning rider Eurico da Silva. “He just took the lead and was running very easy. He was very comfortable.

“I still had a little bit more horse to fight on at the end. He was running very strong. It’s hard to catch a horse when they increase and increase their speed,” the jockey added.

Conquest Pacemaker, bred in Kentucky by Marion G. Montanari, has now won $88,984 for his namesake owner Conquest Stables.
