Not This Time’s 3-year-old colt Cogburn zipped through six furlongs in 1:09.44 while posting a four-length allowance win in the fourth race on March 25 at Oaklawn Park, leading at every point in a very impressive effort.
Away from the races since breaking his maiden by a similar margin in September at Churchill Downs, Cogburn established command right after the start, taking a one-length lead through a quarter in :22.35. He maintained his margin until the top of the stretch, when he pulled away under a hand ride to win going away and earning a very good Beyer Speed Figure of 89.
Trained by Steve Asmussen for Clark Brewster and William & Corinne Heiligbrodt, Cogburn was purchased by his owners for $150,000 at the 2021 OBS Spring 2-year-olds in Training sale. The bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Bellary Bloodstock and is the second foal to race out of his stakes-winning dam In a Jif.
Not This Time leads this year’s Third-Crop Sire list by a wide margin, with more than $2 million in progeny earnings and a trio of graded stakes winners. He’ll have several chances to add to both totals this weekend with Epicenter in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and four other listed stakes entries.
