California Chrome returns on top in San Pasqual S. (G2)

Looking every bit like the champion he is, California Chrome’s powerful stretch run carried the 5-year-old to clear victory in Santa Anita Park’s $200,000 San Pasqual S. (G2) on Saturday.

The 2014 Horse of the Year was making his first start sporting the silks of the new partnership of Taylor Made Farm and Perry Martin, and he didn’t disappoint the “Chromies” who were out in force to support their champ.

After an alert break, California Chrome and Victor Espinoza ceded the lead to longshot Alfa Bird. After a soft half-mile in :49.12 seconds California Chrome ranged up to the leader and had a two-length lead going into the stretch. Under moderate urging from Espinoza in the lane, California Chrome comfortably held off Imperative late to hit the wire in 1:43.39 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast track.

Trainer Art Sherman, obviously ecstatic with the win, summed up things on TVG on the way to the winner’s circle. “To come back like this after (being away from the races for nine months), it just makes you feel so good.”

The win was California Chrome’s 10th in 19 lifetime starts, with six graded victories, topped of course by the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1). With Saturday’s $120,000 payday, California Chrome’s earnings now stand at $6,442,650.
