Breeders’ Cup preview: Unbridled’s Song

Unbridled’s Song will be represented by a quartet of horses in four different races in this year’s Breeders’ Cup.

Kicking off the set on Friday, Nov. 2 will be Balladry in the $500,000 Marathon (G2). Trained by Eoin Harty, Balladry drew post 3 in the full field of 14 for the 1 ¾ mile route. The 4-year-old has the distinction of being out of a Breeders’ Cup winner; his dam Storm Song took the 1996 Juvenile Fillies (G1), as well as the Frizette S. (G1) and Adirondack S. (G2).

Looking to Saturday, Noble Tune starts in the $1 million Juvenile Turf (G1). The Chad Brown trainee is undefeated in two starts, turning in a remarkable race in Belmont Park’s Grade 3 Pilgrim S. on Oct. 8.  Noble Tune drew the nine hole in what will be a full gate of 14 going one mile.

Unbridled’s Song’s best hope may come with Emcee in the $1 million Dirt Mile (G1). Installed the 5-2 second choice in a field of nine, Emcee has won four of seven lifetime starts, topped by his victory in the Grade 1 Forego S.

Rounding out the gang of four is Unbridled’s Note in the 6 1/2-furlong, $1 million Turf Sprint (G1). Run on Santa Anita’s unique downhill turf course, the race presents a rare challenge for many shippers. With a win in the Grade 3 Eddie D. Stakes last time out, Unbridled’s Note is well suited for the course. As usual, the race drew a full field of 14, with Unbridled’s Note installed the 5-1 second choice as he breaks from post 13 under Corey Nakatani.
