Amazombie aims for repeat in Breeders’ Cup Sprint

All systems are go for Amazombie as the son of Northern Afleet tries for a repeat in the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park. Amazombie wrapped up his 2011 Eclipse Award winning season with a victory in the Sprint at Churchill Downs.

Always one of the toughest races on the Breeders’ Cup card, the Sprint drew a highly competitive field of 14. Owing to the competition, Amazombie was made the 4-1 morning line favorite and will break from post 11, much to the delight of his trainer and co-owner Bill Spawr.

“I love it. He usually gets the one, this time he got two ones (11),” said Spawr after the draw. “He should be out in the clear with no excuses from there. Traffic is usually rough in this race down inside, but he should be able to avoid it.”

Amazombie has amassed earnings of $1,920,378 in his 28-race career, finishing in the top three on 23 occasions. Besides the Breeders’ Cup victory, the 6-year-old has wins in the Bing Crosby S. (G1), Ancient Title S. (G1), and twice in the Potrero Grande S. (G2).

Amazombie is one of 10 stakes winners in 2012 by Northern Afleet. A win in the Sprint would put Amazombie past the $2.5 million earnings mark, nearing the figure earned by Northern Afleet’s lifetime earnings leader Afleet Alex.
