Ain’t Life Grand comes up huge in the Iowa Breeders’ Derby

Ain’t Life Grand turned the $100,000 Iowa Breeders’ Derby into a one-horse race at the top of the stretch, strolling home a 13 ¼-length winner in the Saturday night contest at Prairie Meadows (WATCH RACE).

The 3-year-old son of Not This Time is now a five-time stakes winner of $489,283 for owner/breeder RPM Thoroughbreds, with three of those wins coming this term and the first pair as a 2-year-old.

Ain’t Life Grand, who faced the best of his division in the Aug. 27 Travers S. (G1), completely outclassed the field on Saturday. He galloped along in second for five furlongs, then took the lead under his own power on the final turn. He was in hand as he widened through the stretch to stop the timer in 1:43.70 on a fast track.

Ain’t Life Grand is out of Cat d’Oro, an unraced daughter of Prioress S. (G1) winner Cat Moves. Cat d’Oro was bred back to Not This Time for 2023.

Not This Time has virtually assured himself of the top spot on the 2022 Third-Crop sire list, with more than $10.3 million in progeny earnings to date, along with 12 stakes winners, five of them graded winners.
