Evening Jewel will go postward in the $584,300 Kentucky Oaks (G1) on Apr. 30 from gate 11 after the race drew a full field of 14 three-year-old fillies. The daughter of Northern Afleet comes into the Oaks off a front-running victory in the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland on Apr. 3.
Evening Jewel will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux, who was aboard in the Ashland. That race was her first trip outside California. She shipped back to trainer Jim Cassidy’s barn after the win and was expected to fly to Kentucky on Tuesday. She got her final tune-up for the Oaks on Apr 23. at Santa Anita, where she worked a bullet five furlongs in :59 2/5.
Prior to the Ashland, Evening Jewel was second by a nose in the Las Virgenes (G1), just getting nipped by Oaks favorite Blind Luck, and second in the Santa Ysabel (G3) to kick off her 2010 campaign. Her overall record stands at 3-4-0 in eight starts, with earnings of $410,600 for owner Braly Family Trust.
