Evening Jewel keeps rolling, takes G2 San Clemente

Northern Afleet’s 3-year-old daughter Evening Jewel just keeps piling up the Graded stakes victories, notching her third Graded score of 2010 in the $150,000 San Clemente H. (G2) on the Del Mar turf on July 25. Earlier this year, she won the Honeymoon H. (G2) at Hollywood Park and the Central Bank Ashland S. (G1) over the main track at Keeneland.

The one-mile San Clemente drew a solid field that included several Graded stakes winners, but the bettors still made Evening Jewel the 8-5 favorite. And she didn’t disappoint. After laying fourth for the first six furlongs in an ideal stalking trip, she went three wide at the top of the lane and got the lead in mid-stretch, ultimately winning by three-quarters of a length over a hard-trying City to City, who was third in the Honeymoon. The winning time of 1:35.36 over the firm turf included a final furlong in a lively 11.44 seconds.

The $90,000 payday raised Evening Jewel’s lifetime earnings to $696,943. A model of consistency, she is now 5-5-0 in 11 starts for her owners, the Braly Family Trust. If trainer Jim Cassidy keeps her on the grass, her next start could come in the Del Mar Oaks (G1) on Aug 21.

Evening Jewel is the first foal out of Jewel of the Night, who is a half-sister to the multiple stakes winners Saucey Evening and Petition the Lady. She also comes from the same family that includes multiple Grade 1 winner General Challenge.

Evening Jewel is the leading earner on the year for Northern Afleet, who is ranked 12th on the 2010 North American general sire list with earnings of $3,426,412 through July 25. He has 95 winners on the year, which ranks eighth among all North American sires.
