Etched scratches out victory in G2 Monmouth Cup

Etched made it 2-for-2 in 2010 with a neck victory over a very good field in the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup Oct. 9 at the New Jersey track. The son of Taylor Made’s Forestry won the Formal Gold S. on Sept. 12 at the same track.

The $300,000 Monmouth Cup, at nine furlongs on the main track, had a compact field of six, but every horse in the field had at least one graded stakes victory to their credit. Musket Man went off the big favorite at 1-2, while the Darley Stable homebred Etched was let go at a generous 7-1. Chirac set a leisurely pace of nearly 50 seconds for the half-mile, with Etched just off the leader’s flank. The pair moved together for the next two furlongs, when Etched began to pull clear. Down the stretch, he had to hold off a hard-charging Musket Man to win by a neck in 1:50.31.

Etched captured this race last year when it was known as the Meadowlands Cup.  The Monmouth Cup victory was the seventh in nine starts for Etched, a 5-year-old out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Elaine, who captured the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).  He has now banked $587,586.

Forestry has shown his versatility as a stallion once again this year. His stakes winners of 2010 include the 2-year-old filly New Normal (G3 Natalma); 3-year-old colt Forestry Type (Prairie Mile); and 6-year-old Forest Attack (Dust Commander).
