$925K Unbridled’s Song sales grad wins in debut

Lauburu, a 2-year-old colt by Unbridled’s Song, won his debut going seven furlongs at Aqueduct on Nov. 13. The gray or roan was consigned and sold by Taylor Made, as agent for Aaron and Marie Jones, at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale for $925,000. The price was the highest during session one of the sale, and the fifth highest seller overall.

At Aqueduct, Lauburu was sent off the 9-5 favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher. The colt stalked the pace in second for the first five furlongs, then engaged the leader, Five Sigma Event, as the duo came into the stretch. Lauburu eased in front about a sixteenth from the wire, then held off a late charge by Break Up the Game to win by a nose in 1:24.50.

The winner, out of Grade 3-placed mare Goulash, is a half-brother to two-time champion distaffer Ashado, won won seven Grade 1 events and $3,931,440; Saint Stephen, winner of the Grade 3 Native Diver H.; Hollywood Turf Cup (G1) champ Sunriver; and the stakes placed Storm Creek Rising and Ballado’s Halo.

Lauburu is owned by a partnership of Michael B. Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, James T. Scatuorchio & Derrick Smith. The colt, bred in Kentucky by the Jones’, earned $27,000 for the victory.
