Thoroughbred Times Today has tabbed the 3-year-old Forestry colt Shackleford as one to watch on the road to the 2011 Triple Crown.

In his “Under the Radar” column in the January 26 issue of the TODAY, Jeff Lowe singled out Shackleford as one of the nation’s most promising three-year-olds who has yet to run in a stakes.

Shackleford was an impressive winner of his only start on conventional dirt, a $59,456 maiden special weight last November 27 at Churchill Downs. Racing on the same main track surface he will face if he makes it to the Derby, Shackelford battled gamely when headed in deep stretch, then pulled away for a ¾-length triumph. (Watch Race)

A homebred racing for Mike Lauffer and Bill Cubbedge, Shackleford is in the capable hands of veteran trainer Dale Romans, who took Paddy O’Prado and First Dude to Classic success in 2010, placing in all three U.S. Triple Crown races.

Shackleford is a half brother to Grade 1 winner and near millionaire Lady Joanne, and to multiple Graded stakes winner Baghdaria ($725,433).
