Aegean wins Sunshine Millions F&M Sprint in 2011 debut

Northern Afleet’s 4-year-old daughter Aegean won the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint in dramatic fashion on Jan. 29, battling her way to a nose victory in her 2011 debut (VIDEO). This was one of three stakes victories on the day for Northern Afleet progeny. All three came in the Sunshine Millions program, held annually for Florida and California breds at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park.

Aegean also won her last start of 2010, the Dream Supreme S., part of the Breeders’ Cup undercard at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

Aegean was allowed to settle in fifth after the first quarter mile of the six furlong trip. She began to advance four wide around the turn, putting a head in front near the top of the stretch. She dispatched pacesetter Feel That Fire inside the furlong pole, only to be engaged by Jessica Is Back. Aegean would not let her foe by, stopping the clock in an excellent 1:09.61 for a 91 Beyer Speed Figure.

This was the third career stakes win for Aegean, who took the Kentucky Juvenile (G3), also at Churchill Downs, in April, 2009. She is 5-0-2 in 13 starts, with earnings of $329,532 for owner Steven Michael Bell. She was bred in Florida by Vegso Racing Stable.
