Amazombie adds $125,000 Tiznow to resume

Amazombie stretched his formidable sprinter’s speed to 7 1/2-furlongs in the $125,000 Tiznow S. (VIDEO), part of the California Gold Rush card April 23 at Hollywood Park. The 5-year-old son of Northern Afleet has already established himself a top-class sprinter; Amazombie was coming off a victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Potrero Grande S. (G2) April 3.

Sent off the 6-5 favorite in the Tiznow, Amazombie went to the front right out of the gate. Jockey Joel Rosario rationed his mount’s speed, and several foes tried him, but none could get closer than a length. Once in the stretch, he pulled away with authority, widening to win by 2 3/4-lengths in a time of 1:29.06.

On stretching out to the 7 1/2-furlongs, trainer Bill Spawr was quietly confident. “I thought he could do it, but until you do it, you don’t know,” he said. “Mentally, in the last six to eight weeks, he has relaxed so much.”

“I want to give him a little bit of a break,” Spawr said. “The way he handled this track, we might wait for the (Grade 1) Triple Bend (at Hollywood on July 2).”

Amazombie has now won three of four starts in 2011; prior to the Potrero Grande, he won the Sunshine Millions Sprint at Santa Anita in January. For his career, he has won 8 of 18 starts and $503,708.

Owned by Spawr and Tom Sanford, Amazombie was bred in California by Gregg Anderson.

Northern Afleet ranks second among all North American stallions in terms of stakes winners and stakes wins.
