Unbridled’s Song sires #1 filly, #2 colt Day 2 at Saratoga

Unbridled’s Song sired the high-priced filly and the second high-priced colt during Tuesday night’s second session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale August 9 in Saratoga Springs.

The colt sold for $775,000 and the filly for $400,000, giving their sire a two-day average of $422,000 for five yearlings sold. This was 32% higher than the overall sale average, and third best among all sires with three or more sold.

At Tuesday’s evening session, the second high-priced colt was a gun-metal gray bred by the late George Steinbrenner’s Kinsman Farm. Catalogued as Hip 111 in the Lane’s End consignment and already named Whippendeal, the colt is out of Kinsman’s millionaire Grade 1 winner/Grade 1 producer Dream Supreme, dam of Hopeful S. (G1) winner Majestic Warrior and additional stakes winners Evolutionist and Crystal Current.

“I thought he had the best pedigree in the sale,” said 2011 Classic trainer Dale Romans, who purchased him on behalf of a still-forming syndicate. “He is a very good-looking yearling and very well balanced. I think he was one of the best horses in the sale. He has the pedigree to be a stallion after his racing career is over…He is out of one of the best producers and best racemares in the country, so to have the opportunity to get a horse like him is rare.”

Tuesday’s top filly sold just three hips before the colt, and brought $400,000 from Robert Masterson. The bay miss was bred by Globe Equine Management (Ire), and sold in the Eaton Sales consignment. Foaled in Ireland, she is out of Dancing Shoes (Ire), by Danehill, and is a half sister to 2010 La Canada (G2) winner Striking Dancer.

Unbridled’s Song has the highest lifetime yearling average of any sire at stud. In 2011, he has already sired 23 stakes horses and earners of $5.4 million worldwide.
