Amazombie and Teaks North, this year’s two leading earners for their sire Northern Afleet, look to add to their impressive totals in the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs.
Amazombie will start things off for his sire in the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint, race 5 at 2:37 p.m. The six furlong sprint will be the first start at Churchill for the southern California-based 5-year-old, who has hit the board in all eight of his starts this year. He tuned up for the Breeders’ Cup with a win in Santa Anita’s Ancient Title H. (G1) on Oct. 8 and will once again be paired up with Mike Smith, who has ridden him in all three of his graded stakes victories.
Three races later in the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), 4-year-old Teaks North will go for his third Grade 1 win of the year. The dark bay Florida bred is one of four millionaires sired by Northern Afleet. His top-rung added money wins this year came in the Gulfstream Park Turf H. in February and the United Nations H. in July. He also won the Grade 3 Monmouth S. in June.
The dam of Teaks North, Teaksberry Road, has been an excellent producer. Besides Teaks North, she is the dam of Grade 2 winner Wooden Phone, and listed winners Chief Okie Dokie and Teak Totem.
