Amazombie named 2011 Sprint Eclipse Award winner

Amazombie’s come-from-behind victory in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) earned the son of Northern Afleet the 2011 Eclipse Award for best sprinter at the awards ceremony on June 16 in Beverly Hills, Calif. He received 201 first-place votes out of 248 votes cast.

Amazombie, now six, was far from a one-hit wonder, however. He also racked up victories in the Grade 1 Ancient Title H. and the Grade 2 Potrero Grande H., both at Santa Anita, last year. In addition, he crossed the wire first in the Grade 3 Los Angeles H. at Hollywood Park. He wound up the year with a record of 5-1-3, earning $1,327,000 for co-owners Tom Sanford and Bill Spawr. Spawr also trains the colt.

According to the Daily Racing Form, Spawr said he has tentatively outlined a six-race schedule for Amazombie at 6, starting with the Grade 2 Palos Verdes H. this month at Santa Anita and ending with a defense of his Breeders’ Cup Sprint title on Nov. 3, also at Santa Anita.

Northern Afleet finished 2011 ranked in the top 20 on the General Sire List, with Amazombie his leading money earner on the year. Northern Afleet will stand the 2012 season for $15,000 LFS&N.
