Russellin hustles to Oaklawn feature victory

Russellin, Old Fashioned’s latest up-and-comer from his first crop, flashed his unlimited potential in Thursday’s feature race at Oaklawn Park, drawing off to a 3 1/2-length victory after coming from last in the 10-horse field (VIDEO).

Three-year-old Russellin, who is now two-for-three lifetime, got away cleanly from post seven but settled in the back of the pack while some four wide around the first turn. Kept well off the rail down the backstretch, Russellin began to pick off horses heading for the far turn.

Cruising past foes effortlessly around the bend, the eventual winner struck the front after straightening for home and was handridden to the wire in “an ultra-confident score”.

Russellin is trained by Chris Hartman for Chris Wilkins, who bought the the Kentucky bred colt for $100,000 out of the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Spring sale. Russellin is out of Vikki’s Honor, a stakes winner of more than $300,000. Russellin is now 2-1-0 in three starts, earning $80,000.

Old Fashioned’s current crop of 3-year-olds is led by the graded stakes winning duo of Fashion Plate (G1 Las Virgenes S.) and Sweet Whiskey (G3 Old Hat S.). He is also the sire of promising 3-year-old colt The Trunk Monkey.
