Fashion Plate rolled to a front-running score in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks to stamp the daughter of Old Fashioned as one of the favorites for the May 2 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old filly has now won two consecutive Grade 1 events following her win in the Las Virgenes S., also at Santa Anita, on Feb. 1.

Old Fashioned is leads all Second-crop sires with three stakes wins to date. Fashion Plate is his leading earner this year, helping boost his overall progeny earning to over $800,000.

Fashion Plate, with Gary Stevens in the irons, dictated things from the outset of the 1 1/16-mile race. The dark bay filly never let any of her foes, which included Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Ria Anontia, within a length of her at any point. The final margin was 1 1/4-lengths over that filly, with a final time of 1:42.97.

“I’ve won a few races like this in my day,” said the Hall of Famer Stevens. “She was reminding me of (1988 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner) Winning Colors going down the backside. I thought if I can keep doing this, it’s going to be pretty special.”

“She was the speed horse, obviously, and when she was able to go the right fractions, down the backside, Gary found time to take a little breather on her and just bring her back and then let her go again,” said winning trainer Simon Callaghan.

As races go, it was a perfect ride. I think for now, it (Kentucky Oaks) would make sense. She’s getting better almost as we stretch out in distance. She’s a really smart filly and she relaxes well.”

Fashion Plate is owned by Arnold Zetcher and Michael Tabor. Callaghan purchased the filly on their behalf for $340,000 at the 2013 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale a year ago. She was bred in Kentucky by Springland Farm and Fox Hill Farms.

With Saturday’s win, Fashion Plate upped her bankroll to $459,250 with a mark of 3-0-1 from five starts.
