Sweet Whiskey, a 3-year-old Old Fashioned filly, added to her impressive resume with a close second-place finish in the $750,000 Acorn S. (G1) June 6 at Belmont Park.
Sweet Whiskey has been off the board only once in seven career outings, with a win in the Old Hat S. (G3) earlier this year at Gulfstream Park. She also placed in both the Beaumont S. (G2) in April and the Matron S. (G2) in 2013.
The one-mile Acorn featured a full field of 13 sophomore fillies. Sweet Whiskey was in mid-pack for the first half-mile, then made a bold move to duel down the lane with Sweet Reason, holding resolutely for second, four lengths clear of third-place finisher Unbridled Forever.
“When I rode her at Keeneland, I said I’m going to do the same thing today – take her back, put her behind horses and hope she takes the dirt,” said Hall of Famer John Velazquez, jockey aboard Sweet Whiskey. “She was perfect. Perfect trip.”
Sweet Whiskey is one of a pair of 2014 graded stakes winners for Old Fashioned, who ranks third on the Second Crop Sire list with $1.2 million in progeny earnings.
