Northern Afleet and Eskendereya runners score in Woodbine GS

Runners by Taylor Made stallions Northern Afleet and Eskendereya both added to their black-type resumes this past weekend at Woodbine in graded stakes, with top turf horse Kaigun finishing second in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile and Isabella Sings becoming Eskendereya’s first stakes horse in the $228,000 Natalma S (G2).

Kaigun, Northern Afleet’s leading runner of 2014, put in another strong showing in the $1 million Woodbine Mile after winning the Grade 2 Play the King S., the local prep for the meet’s spotlight turf race.

After encountering traffic trouble for much of the race, Kaigun shook clear in the stretch, with only the furious rally by Trade Storm preventing him from taking home the lion’s share of the purse. Jockey Patrick Husbands thought his mount didn’t find the off going to his liking, making the effort that much more remarkable.

Nevertheless, Kaigun’s earnings rose to $764,220 with a lifetime mark of 4-4-1 in 15 starts.

Isabella Sings, who broke her maiden in July at Belmont Park, was making just her second lifetime start in the Natalma. Far back early, she swept to the lead at the top of the stretch, battling gamely to lose by a short neck in her first start at the mile distance over a yielding turf course.

Isabella Sings is one of five winners by Eskendereya, who ranks in the top 10 on the 2014 Freshman Sire list.
