California Chrome posts strong Los Alamitos workout

2014 Horse of the Year continued his 2016 campaign preparations with a solid three furlong work Nov. 21 at Los Alamitos Race Course, getting the distance in :37 3/5 seconds under the eye of trainer Art Sherman. This was his third workout since resuming training a short time ago.

Taylor Made acquired an interest in the 4-year-old colt this summer when they bought out owners Steve and Carolyn Coburn. Perry and Denise Martin, who co-owned the Derby and Preakness winner, retained their ownership share. California Chrome will stand at Taylor Made when his racing career concludes.

Following the work, the veteran Sherman liked what he saw.

“He’s muscling up. He’s got a lot of air power,” Sherman told The Blood-Horse. “I watch him now, when he gallops out, you think he might be getting a little tired, but he gets stronger when he gallops out, so that’s a good sign. It shows he wants to do more and I like that a lot.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to pull him up, because I think he goes faster when you try to get a good hold of him.”

Sherman added that California Chrome is “right on schedule” for the $200,000 San Pasqual S. (G2) Jan. 9 at Santa Anita Park, which would be his first start since running second in the Dubai World Cup (G1) in late March.

California Chrome currently has a record of nine wins, three seconds, and a third from 18 starts and earnings of $6,322,650.

Long-term plans for California Chrome could include a return to Dubai next Spring, and ultimately the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) a year from now.
