California Chrome gets the gold in the Dubai World Cup (G1)

California Chrome’s illustrious career reached new heights at Meydan on Saturday with a tremendous victory in the $10 million Dubai World Cup (G1) over a stellar field.

Trainer Art Sherman was less than ecstatic when California Chrome drew post 11 in the 12-horse field, but the 5-year-old secured a good spot near the front while three wide around the first turn. Victor Espinoza held his spot, less than a length off the lead but still in the three path as the field made its way down the backstretch.

When leader Mshawish came off the rail, allowing Mubtaahj (IRE) to sneak through and take command coming into the final quarter mile, California Chrome was forced four-wide. But with plenty of run left, the flashy chestnut quickly went to the front, powering away from the field to capture racing’s biggest prize.

The final time for the 2,000 meters was 2:01.92 on the fast track.

“I was very nice and comfortable where I was (on the outside),” said Espinoza. “When I turned for home, I knew I had to go (because I felt his saddle slipping), but I didn’t realize how far until I crossed the wire.”

“I knew he liked it on the outside.” added an overjoyed train Art Sherman. “He’s a great horse, what can you say. To have him back, with all my family and friends, it’s a dream of a lifetime.”

Racing under the name of California Chrome LLC for his owners that include Taylor Made Farm and Perry Martin, California Chrome became North America’s all-time leading earner. With the $6 million payday, his earnings stand at $12,532,650. He will join Taylor Made’s stallion roster when he concludes his racing career.
