California Chrome wins second Horse of the Year honors

California Chrome made history on Saturday evening at the Eclipse Awards when he took home both Horse of the Year and Older Male honors. He became just the second horse to win Horse of the Year honors in non-consecutive years, and the first since John Henry accomplished the feat in 1981 and 1984.

California Chrome won seven of eight starts in 2016, counting the Dubai World Cup, Pacific Classic, and Awesome Again S., all Grade 1 events, among his victories. He had five Beyer Speed Figures above 110, including a 119 in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, when he finished second to Arrogate by a half-length.

With both Perry Martin and Frank Taylor of Taylor Made Farm making acceptance speeches at the ceremony Saturday evening, they both looked forward to Chrome’s rematch with Arrogate in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.

California Chrome defeated Arrogate and the brilliant filly Songbird for Horse of the Year, while he bested Frosted and Lord Nelson of Older Male honors.

Following the Pegasus World Cup, California Chrome will be retired to Taylor Made Farm, where he will take up stud duties. The farm has announced his stud fee at $40,000 live foal stands and nurses.
