Graydar tallied a pair of 2-year-old winners on Saturday to give the top-five Second-Crop Sire a total of 60 on the year, the third-most of any Second-Crop sire standing in North America in 2018.
Leading the way was the super-impressive Gray Magician, who strolled to a 9 1/2-length maiden special weight score at Del Mar. The gray/roan colt was full of run in the stretch, drawing off at will after sitting a few lengths from the front early on. He wrapped up the mile in 1:38.55 and earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure in his first two-turn start.
Gray Magician was bred by Twin Creeks Farm and is out of the stakes-winning mare Burg Berg, making him a full brother to this year’s Robert B. Lewis S. (G3) winner Lombo.
Earlier in the afternoon at Woodbine, the filly Pearl Heist had to work much harder for her win, but got the job done in the six-furlong allowance contest to run her record to a perfect two-for-two for her owner John McDonald. Winning by a neck in the final strides, she covered the distance in a solid 1:10.54.
Pearl Heist is out of Pearl Keys, whose siblings include stakes winners Tell All You Know and Don’ttalktome.
