Disco Time overcame a very wide trip to win Saturday’s $250,000 Lecomte S. (G3) at Fair Grounds, earning the 3-year-old Not This Time colt his first 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Disco Time, who had a maiden and allowance win to his credit coming into Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile race, was far back in the early stages over the sloppy going. He made up a bit of ground on the backstretch, then as he accelerated through the turn, had no choice but to go some eight-wide coming into the stretch to avoid traffic. He chipped away at his deficit through the lane and passed Innovator and Built in the final strides to win by a neck.
“That wasn’t the way we drew it up before the race, but he broke OK, and from there I saw lot of horses going at it, so I just tucked in,” winning jockey Florent Geroux said. “I was able to save a lot of going into the first turn, which was important given the tough post we had. From there he relaxed beautifully for me and took the kickback very well.”
Three-for-three Disco Time is owned and bred by Juddmonte and has now earned $291,960. The dark bay colt is the second foal out of Disco Chick, herself a four-time stakes winner.
Not This Time had a stellar Saturday, with Gigante winning the Colonel E. R. Bradley S. earlier on the Fair Grounds card, and My Sherrona a good second in the Busanda S. at Aqueduct.
