La Marinera first winner for Taylor Made Stallions’ Instilled Regard

Taylor Made Stallions’ Instilled Regard sired his first winner on Sunday, May 26, when first-crop filly La Marinera beat the boys in a $92,000 maiden special weight over five furlongs at Churchill Downs.

Runner-up in a pair of maiden special weight events at Keeneland and Horseshoe Indianapolis to begin her career, La Marinera broke like a shot on Sunday, dueling with Coming In Hot through an opening quarter in a lively :22.51. She disposed of that rival on the far turn and shook loose of the field at the head of the lane to widen her advantage to as many as five lengths. She went on to win comfortably by 1 ¼ lengths over a sloppy surface.

Owned by John Acevedo, La Marinera is trained by Kelly Fernandez and ridden by Rogelio Miranda. Bred in Kentucky by Shadowbrook Farm, La Marinera, a graduate of the 2023 Keeneland September Sale, is the first foal out of the Curlin mare Curlin Supreme. La Marinera’s second dam is multiple stakes winner Tin Top Cat, an earner of $384,774.

Royally-bred Instilled Regard is a Grade 1 winner and near millionaire earner of $983,240. The son of Arch was a $1.05 million OBS March 2-year-old purchase and is out of the winning Forestry mare Enhancing who is a half-sister to Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Heavenly Prize, the dam of Pure Prize. Instilled Regard descends from a deep Ogden Phipps family replete with influential stallions Roberto, Danzig, Storm Cat, and Seeking the Gold within the first three generations.

Versatile and precocious, Instilled Regard won four graded stakes on dirt and turf in his racing career, including the 2020 Manhattan S. (G1). He was a dominant 4 ¼-length maiden special weight winner in his 2-year-old bow at Santa Anita and was runner-up in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) by a head to multiple Grade 1 winner McKinzie. The following year, Instilled Regard jumped on the Derby trail with an impressive score in the Lecomte S. (G3). He subsequently finished just behind Triple Crown champion Justify, Eclipse Champion Good Magic, and Grade 1 winner Audible in that year’s Kentucky Derby (G1), running the fastest final quarter-mile of the top four.

Instilled Regard is represented by first 2-year-olds in the auction ring this year up to $130,000 at the OBS Spring Sale and $100,000 at the recent Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale.
