California Chrome hit a highwater mark during Tuesday’s closing session of the Aug. 5-6 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale when a filly by the two-time Horse of the Year sold for $230,000.
Offered by Old Chapel Farm’s Andrew Motion, hip No. 213 went to celebrity chef and noted horseman Bobby Flay. The gray or roan Kentucky-bred is out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Edit, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Miss Catalyst and from the same family as champion filly Tempest Queen.
California Chrome entered stud at Taylor Made after fan favorite had amassed more than $14 million in earnings. After breeding more than 275 mares his first two seasons combined, his first yearlings are on the scene this year. Buyers will have their next big chance to see his foals at Keeneland, where he has a total of 59 lots cataloged for the upcoming Keeneland September Yearling sale.
