#2 sire Northern Afleet logs another 2011 stakes winner

Northern Afleet, America’s #2 sire in several categories including number of stakes winners, added number five to his 2011 total on Feb. 26, with Afleet Deceit’s win in the $50,000 Sam Houston Distaff S. at Sam Houston Racetrack.

Northern Afleet’s great start in 2011 has put him near the top among all North American sires in progeny earnings (2nd), winners (4th), stakes winners (2nd), and stakes wins (2nd). His stakes winners are led by Teaks North, winner of the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf H., and Evening Jewel, who took the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff S. and was second in the Valentine Dancer H. at Santa Anita on Feb. 26.

Afleet Deceit had a very rough trip in the 1 1/16 mile Distaff. The 5-year-old mare was bumped around and had to steady hard going into the first turn. She was in sixth, about eight lengths off the lead for the run down the backstretch. The bay began her rally on the turn, sweeping four wide into the stretch. She continued her strong drive on the outside to strike the front inside the final furlong, winning by 1 1/2-lengths.

Afleet Deceit collected her second career stakes win in the Distaff. She won the 2009 Double Delta S. and was also second to eventual Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in both the Fantasy S. (G2) and Honeybee S. (G3). Her record now stands at 6-6-2 from 21 starts, with earnings of $305,357.

Taylor Made consigned and sold Afleet Deceit to the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale, where she was bought by her owner William Stiritz. She was bred in Kentucky by Heiligbrodt Racing Stable and Taylor Brothers Properties LLC.
